Sam from OpenAI on The GPT-4 Conundrum: Hype vs Reality
The GPT-4 Myth: Busting the Bubble of AI expectation
Are you ready for the next big thing in AI language models? Well, don't hold your breath because according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, "people are begging to be disappointed and they will be" when it comes to the highly-anticipated GPT-4.
Rumors have been swirling about the release of GPT-4, the latest in the GPT series and the foundation of AI chatbot ChatGPT. But when asked about a potential release date, Altman remained tight-lipped. "It'll come out at some point, when we are confident we can do it safely and responsibly," he said in an interview with StrictlyVC.
The hype surrounding GPT-4 has reached fever pitch, with some in the AI community and Silicon Valley declaring it to be a game-changer. But Altman isn't buying it. "The GPT-4 rumor mill is a ridiculous thing. I don't know where it all comes from," he said. "The hype is just like... We don't have an actual AGI and that's sort of what's expected of us." (AGI, for the uninitiated, stands for "artificial general intelligence" and refers to an AI system with at least human-equivalent capabilities across many domains.)
But Altman isn't just pouring cold water on GPT-4, he's also dousing any hopes for generative video AI. When asked about when OpenAI will build an AI model capable of generating video, he said, "It will come. I wouldn't want to make a confident prediction about when."
So, while we may not be getting GPT-4 or generative video AI anytime soon, Altman did offer some food for thought on the topic of AI bias. He said, "The world can say, 'Okay here are the rules, here are the very broad absolute rules of a system.' But within that, people should be allowed very different things that they want their AI to do."
In short, don't believe the hype when it comes to GPT-4 and don't hold your breath for the next big thing in AI. But do keep an open mind about the different ways we want our AI to behave and the values we want it to enforce.
